Supply Ditch History
The Supply Ditch Company was formed on February 3, 1897, with a planned existence of twenty years. At that time, the company’s stock totaled $10,000.00, which was divided into 10,000 shares, meaning the shares were valued at $1 per share. In November of 1898, the company increased its capital stock to $20,000.00, still at $1 per share. On February 3, 1917, the ditch company increased its articles of incorporation to forty years and changed its name to Supply Ditch Association. On September 1, 1956, the Supply Ditch Association passed a resolution to extend the corporation’s life to perpetual and filed for the right of continual succession. An early record dated January 26, 1918 states that five shares equal one miner’s inch. One miner’s inch equals 1.5 cubic feet per minute.
This ditch system started several years before its original incorporation as a private ditch called the Wood-Parkhurst Ditch and as extensions were added to the ditch, a separate system developed called the Supply Ditch Company. The Supply Ditch Association is two separate systems, each one having their own operations and maintenance. The Woods-Parkhurst Ditch covers the first 6 ¾ miles and the rest of the system is considered to be the Supply Ditch. Both systems use the same head gate and ditch from the Bitterroot River. The Supply Ditch has a water right for 5000 total inches available at the headgate in the Bitterroot River. 4000 of those inches are considered usable by the shareholders due to conveyance loss.

The Ditch Managers have the right to inspect your irrigation system for compliance. If it is found that the user is taking too much water, or user does not allow an inspection, The Manager may adjust or turn off water delivery. A user may be required to install a measuring device on their system upon the request of the board.
Supply Ditch Association does not allow access to the service road or ditch to the general public. The ditch and structures in the ditch are hazardous and are not available for people to recreate on. The land over which the ditch and road traverse is privately owned, therefore people accessing these areas are subject to trespass laws. Please be respectful to the landowners by not trespassing on their property!

Shares can be bought and sold by private individuals. The board generally does not get involved in these transactions. A form must be filled out and a use plan must be approved prior to transfer of shares. The ditch managers and Board will approve/disapprove the transfer based on this information. Buyers of shares should be aware that ownership of shares does not guarantee delivery of water. Please do your due diligence regarding use of headgates and ditches that can be used to deliver water to your property.

Supply Ditch Association’s water delivery responsibility ends at the point of diversion.
Users must keep their ditches clean and usable.
Users must understand how much water they can use and use the correct systems to deliver that water onto their property. Using a pump too large, incorrect sprinkler types and nozzles have detrimental effects on the ditch function and other users. Ditch Managers have the right to inspect your system to check for compliance.
Please keep the area around the headgate clean and clear for the Ditch Managers to access it safely. Do not lock or block the structure in any fashion that would cause an unsafe situation.
Lateral ditches with multiple users must share responsibility for maintenance of their ditch and must work together to share the allotted water in the ditch. The Association responsibility for water delivery ends at the headgate. In these cases, if problems arise, The Board will require users to install a measuring device
All share holders should read and understand the bylaws of the ditch. It is also important to attend the annual meetings and vote your shares.
